How to get started with an Ionic 3 Creator Project<\/h3>\n

When you Start a New Project<\/strong>, you\u2019ll be able to choose Ionic 3.x from the dropdown. Ionic 3 ZIP export is only available for new projects. Old projects can not be converted to Ionic 3 projects.<\/p>\n

During this initial phase, everything in the Creator editor<\/strong> still looks like Ionic 1, but will export with Ionic 3 code (more on that in the section below). Once you\u2019re done draggin\u2019 and droppin\u2019 to your heart\u2019s content, you can export your project and get it working locally.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s next for Creator? (Spoiler: it\u2019s AWESOME)<\/h3>\n

Now, a lot of people have been asking about the future of Creator and what they can expect in the months and years ahead. We\u2019ve been a little quiet on that lately, but it\u2019s time to share our vision for the future of Creator, and where we see it headed. But first, a little history:<\/p>\n

When Angular made the switch to Angular 2, trying to make Creator work with Angular\u2019s new build system took a lot of blood, sweat, and frankly, tears. The truth of the matter is, web development tooling is getting a LOT better, but it\u2019s also getting more complex. Complex in a way that isn\u2019t very compatible with the way Creator works.<\/p>\n

Angular 1 projects can be written and edited in the browser on the fly because they aren\u2019t compiled. Angular 2+ (and therefore Ionic 2+) projects have compilation steps, minification, and don\u2019t have all the injection pieces available that Angular 1 does. This means that they don\u2019t work very well with traditional Drag & Drop in the cloud.<\/p>\n

Creator\u2019s mantra has always been \u201cSimple, but Powerful\u201d and we don\u2019t ever want to sacrifice either one of those in favor of the other. In order to accomplish this goal, we\u2019re going to have to make some drastic changes under the hood of Creator.<\/p>\n

Now before I tell you just how awesome these changes are going to be: know that this isn\u2019t a small project, and it may take us a bit of time<\/em><\/strong>. The good news is that we\u2019re going to be sharing early Alphas with current Creator users as soon as we can (which may still be a few months away).<\/p>\n

Alright, now let\u2019s get aboard the hype train:<\/p>\n

Creator, with a twist<\/h4>\n

Drag-and-drop is powerful on so many fronts. It helps developers learn to program using new tech, significantly decreases development time, decreases the need to constantly check documentation, allows you to see your vision in mere minutes, and it allows you to look awesome in your boss\u2019s eye.<\/p>\n

The version of Creator we\u2019re working on will still have an entirely drag-and-droppable environment, but we\u2019re not stopping there. Creator will become a locally downloadable tool with full 100% customizable code editing.<\/b><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll be able to move in and out of drag-and-drop mode seamlessly while making any<\/em><\/strong> customization you want to the underlying code.<\/p>\n

The power of local<\/h4>\n

Moving Creator to a local desktop app instead of in the browser means we can sit on top of all your local build tools and emulators. The Ionic CLI powerfully manages your entire build process, and we\u2019re going to be able to take advantage of all of it.<\/p>\n

While you\u2019re designing or coding, there will even be a pop out browser or native emulator that live reloads your app as you make changes.<\/p>\n

Any project, any time<\/h4>\n

Creator will function right on top of the local file system, which means you can open existing projects in Creator at any time and we\u2019ll understand them.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no more \u201cWhoops, we have to leave Creator now to program X\u201d — because now Creator will just work with your local files.<\/p>\n

Better collaboration<\/h4>\n

Moving locally also gives us a much better story for collaboration because GIT support comes for free! We\u2019re just working with your local file system, so you can use GIT on your project just like you normally would.<\/p>\n

In fact, some developers may prefer to work without Creator, and that\u2019s fine. Some developers can use Creator, some can use VS Code, some can use Vim or EMACs, but everyone can work together.<\/p>\n
