Addressing food insecurity on campus<\/h3>\n

Columbia University undergrads Helson Taveras, Julio Henriquez, Annie Zhang, and Kunal Kamath built the Ionic app Swipes<\/a> to address food insecurity on campus<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI chose Ionic because I didn’t want to have to make the choice of excluding any particular mobile demographic on campus,\u201d said Taveras. \u201cHaving everyone being able to participate in Swipes is critical to our success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tracking carbon savings to help the environment<\/h3>\n

University of Wisconsin-Madison students John Meurer and Victor Tavares created the MyEarth<\/a> app, which allows users to track their carbon savings, for a sustainability-focused independent project assigned by Professor Suman Banerjee. Meurer completed the app with graduate student Andy Stevens, from Professor Nancy Wong\u2019s research group, and presented the app at the Nelson Institute\u2019s Earth Day Conference in 2015. Time Magazine<\/a> covered the app as a must-have.<\/p>\n

Educating health care workers about Ebola<\/h3>\n

Developer Jean Pokou<\/a> built the Ebola Surveyor<\/a> app for the IT firm Ivocarte Abyshop as a tool for government health care workers to teach and warn residents of the Ivory Coast in West Africa about Ebola.<\/p>\n

\u201cEbola Surveyor helped the health care workers to stop Ebola from crossing the Ivory Coast Border,\u201d says Pokou. \u201cIonic was the right tool for me, because it let me apply everything I was learning at the time about Angular and Cordova. I completed the application in two weeks because of the well-structured Ionic documentation and the forum.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pokou\u2019s code<\/a> is available on GitHub, and he also created a Facebook page<\/a> for the app.<\/p>\n

Providing refugees with information about a new country<\/h3>\n

Developer Mattias Baumgart<\/a> is working on a nonprofit project, the Welcome App Concept<\/a>, run by Saxonia Systems AG and HeiReS GmbH, which provides general information about available resources to refugees seeking asylum in Germany. The iOS<\/a> and Android<\/a> versions of the app are available in English, German, and Arabic. The Windows version was built natively, and the website is in German.<\/p>\n

Helping individuals take action on digital rights issues<\/h3>\n

The Electronic Frontier Foundation<\/a> built its first mobile app<\/a>, to connect users to the EFF Action Center, with Ionic. The code<\/a> is available on GitHub.<\/p>\n

Making it easy to record meaningful conversations<\/h3>\n

StoryCorps<\/a> used Ionic to develop their app<\/a>, which allows users to record conversations they\u2019ve had with loved ones or people with whom they’ve shared a profound moment, in order to create an international archive of stories to preserve for future generations.<\/p>\n
